Antal Dorati (1906-1988), a highly respected orchestra builder, made his second and last visit to Japan in 1982, and the complete program of his guest performance with the Yomiuri Symphony Orchestra is now available on CD. Mahler's "Giants" is the first time the repertoire is introduced. The chemistry between Mahler and Dorati has already been proven with the No. 9 already released on WEITBLICK. The piece has a splendid and robust form, as if ignoring the preamble of "young writer." Especially in the closing section, the scattered motifs are so vivid that they seem to merge with each other while making noises like metallic parts. It is a unique Mahler. The year 1982 was the 250th anniversary of the birth of Haydn, and Dorati, an authority on Haydn's music, was consciously aware of this. The solemnity of the "Desert Island," the elegance of the "London," and the cleanliness of the concerto with Mrs. Alpenheim as soloist are impeccable.
