On the Nose

The nose reveals why Barrell's approach works: the different aging and production regions contribute distinct layers. Dried apricot and raspberry dominate first, followed by sweet caramel and a subtle anise note that speaks to the Polish rye component. Chamomile and floral notes dance around the edges, with mint emerging as you give it time. The cask strength — sitting between 110 and 120 proof depending on batch — doesn't assault the senses; instead, it carries the aromas with a gentle warmth that invites another sniff.

On the Palate

The palate is where the blending skill becomes undeniable. Black raspberry and dark cherry form the fruit foundation, while clove and black tea add spice and tannin structure. Caramel threads through the mid-palate, and a subtle mint note (likely from the Canadian and Polish components) provides freshness. The body is satisfying without being heavy. A few drops of water is almost essential — it transforms the heat into something more approachable, drawing out berries and that chamomile character that makes this whiskey special.

The Finish

The finish is where Barrell justifies its price. It lasts — eight out of ten for finish length isn't hyperbole. Dark fruit, caramel, and subtle oak linger for two to three minutes, with that mint note providing a cool contrast to the warmth of the spirits. While the sourcing transparency could be better (specific mash bills and batch composition aren't disclosed), and batch variation means you're essentially buying a surprise with each release, the consistent quality and complexity prove that independent blending is a legitimate art form.
