A delightful wall tapestry inspired by an original hanging in the Basel region of Switzerland in 1465, The Lovers Tapestry depicts the meeting of two lovers in a flowery grove. In the Middle Ages more than at any other time, love was omnipresent. It was always love of woman which, together with knightly ideal of loyalty, stirred man's courage and made knighthood a form of life above all others.

Shown in this tapestry, a nobleman accepts a gift of fruit from his lady. She is wearing an elaborate flowing dress; her headdress is adorned with jewels. The decorative qualities are enhanced by the innumerable sprays of foliage and plants of all kinds, which have been carefully woven. All are depicted with the simplicity and delicacy that distinguish the work of the master weaver.
