New Pleasures from Nevel and the Wielgus Ensemble, Pursuing the Aesthetics of Renaissance Polyphony. The latest album by Paul van Nervel and the Wielgus Ensemble is dedicated to the German Renaissance composer Ludwig Däser (c.1526-1589). Däser was born into a wealthy family in Munich and received his theological and musical education at the Bayerische Hofkapelle from an early age. In 1572, Däser was appointed Kapellmeister to the court of Stuttgart by Duke Ludwig von Württemberg. s court music director in Stuttgart, a position he held until his death in 1589. His career was marked by the struggles of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation of that era, but he was the most prominent composer of his time. While Nevel and the Welgas Ensemble have recorded two polyphonic masses by famous composers such as Lasso and Cipriano di Lore, as well as other Munich-born composers of the same period, this album sheds light on Dasar's work, which has been overshadowed by Lasso's, and offers a rich two masterpieces from his Munich church music oeuvre.The gold standard of the Mass, "Over the Row of All Things," was written between 1544 and 1555, and an autograph copy of the Mass is preserved in the Bavarian State Library. This six-part Mass, "Over the Ribbon of All Things," is a so-called "parody Mass" (a Mass that uses secular music, typically a motet or part of a chanson, as its melody), and was inspired by the motet of the same name by the great Flemish composer Josquin des Prez. The other four-voice mass, "Except only to wait to die," is of a completely different nature, with the characteristics of Flemish vocal music that Däser had come to know through Ludwig Semple, but with lyrical impressions added. Characteristic of Däser's work are the various ways in which he treats simple melodies in the Mass, such as canons, ornaments, and fixed melodies, as well as the technique of transferring the fixed melody from the tenor to the soprano voice in order to highlight the main melody.
