A tragic love story set in sunny Provence in the south of France: Gounod's opera "Mireille". However, Mireille's father forces her to leave Vincent because of their different status. When Urias, a well-to-do cattle rancher, appears and asks Mireille to marry him, she rejects him outright. In retaliation, Urias insults and mortally wounds Vincent, whom he met on the road. When Mireille hears what has happened to Vincent, she sets off for the church of Sainte-Marie-de-la-Mer to keep her promise that if either of them should suffer a misfortune, the other will go on pilgrimage... Inspired by the original story of a tragic love born of differences in status, set in a rural village in Provence in the south of France, Gounod himself spent several months in the south of France to compose the opera "Mireille". Nicolas Joel (1953-2020), who became general manager of the Paris Opera in 2009, decided to stage the opera himself. He has created a beautiful and sensitive production, with outstanding singers such as Inva Moura and Charles Castronovo. The vivid contrast between the sun-drenched golden days of Provence and the deep stillness of the Rhone River at night is also striking.Marc Minkowski, who has been active in Baroque and Romantic operas, has spun out a lyrical sound from the Orchestre National de l'Opera de Paris that is appropriate for this work by Gounod. This release is a new edition of the disc originally released by FRA Musica in 2010, with Japanese subtitles. Naxos Japan
