The Caliber Armor AR550 Level III+ Steel Body Armor Plate with PolyShield Anti-Spall Coating, bundled with the Condor Modular Operator Plate Carrier (MOPC) Gen II, gives you a fully deployable two-plate armor system built around AR550 ballistic steel and an ergonomic multi-curve press geometry. The plates are NIJ Listed under STANDARD-0101.06 Level III and independently tested to special threats — including M855 — qualifying them at Level III+. Available in 10x12 and 11x14, in Shooters Cut or SAPI Style Cut, with Advanced PolyShield coating or Standard Coating.
AR550 is a high-hardness abrasion-resistant ballistic steel. These plates carry NIJ certification under STANDARD-0101.06 Level III for the PolyShield-coated variant, and are additionally tested to special threats that place them at Level III+. That includes M855 green-tip 5.56x45 — a round Level III plates are not required to stop — making the special-threat rating the operationally relevant designation for most buyers.
Steel armor stops multiple projectile hits. The plates are multi-hit rated and tested, meaning a single shot does not end the plate's service life. One concern with all steel armor is fragmentation: when a round impacts steel, it can fragment and redirect at angles that bypass the plate's face. PolyShield is Caliber Armor's purpose-formulated anti-spall coating applied to the plate surface. It significantly reduces fragmentation risks. Caliber Armor strongly recommends choosing the PolyShield coating over the standard option for this reason.
The bend geometry matters as much as the steel grade. Caliber Armor uses a single-press multi-curve process that replicates the contoured shape common in ceramic armor — without the multiple sequential bends that can introduce stress fractures or localized weaknesses into the steel. The result is a plate that conforms to the torso and reduces pressure points during movement.
Both the Shooters Cut and SAPI Style Cut are available in 10x12 and 11x14. The Shooters Cut removes material from the upper corners of the plate, reducing weight while retaining coverage over the vital organs. The SAPI Style Cut matches the standard military SAPI footprint and seats correctly in carriers designed for that geometry.
The Condor MOPC Gen II accepts Caliber Armor AR550 plates in both 10x12 and 11x14. For thicker composite or ceramic plates from other manufacturers, the MOPC accommodates 10x12 up to 10.25x13.25 inches. The carrier does not have integrated side plate pockets in the Gen II configuration; buyers who want to run hard side plates must add the separately sold VAS Side Plate Inserts. The cummerbund side pockets are sized for the CaliberX IIIA soft armor side panels.
The MOPC Gen II is a one-size-fits-most carrier. Measure from the bottom of your jugular notch to approximately 2–3 inches above your navel, then nipple to nipple, to confirm the 10x12 plate covers your vital zone. Most individuals fit the 10x12; the 11x14 is available for larger frames. The cummerbund adjusts from 40 to 48 inches around the navel.
The MOPC features an emergency drag handle, removable low-profile shoulder pads, adjustable shoulder straps, a front map pocket, a breathable 3D mesh liner, and MOLLE webbing across the front, back, and cummerbund for modular attachments. A 3x9-inch hook-and-loop field is also present. The carrier accommodates either a full cummerbund or an internal waist strap for a reduced-profile configuration. Yes. The PolyShield-coated AR550 plates are NIJ Listed under STANDARD-0101.06 Level III. They are additionally tested to special threats — including M855 — which places them at the Level III+ special-threat designation. The standard-coated variant shares the same steel and geometry; confirm CPL listing status for that variant at nij.ojp.gov if needed.
These plates are tested to NIJ STANDARD-0101.06 Level III threats and to special threats including M855 5.56x45 green-tip. Level III requires stopping six rounds of 7.62x51 NATO M80 ball at 2,780 fps. The Level III+ special-threat designation adds M855 at standard velocity. Steel armor is multi-hit rated; a single impact does not end the plate's service life.
PolyShield is Caliber Armor's purpose-formulated anti-spall coating applied directly to the plate surface. When a round impacts steel armor, fragmentation can redirect toward the wearer. PolyShield significantly reduces that fragmentation risk. Caliber Armor strongly recommends it over the standard coating. The NIJ Listed certification specifically applies to the PolyShield-coated variant.
Shooters Cut removes material from the upper plate corners, reducing weight while retaining vital-organ coverage and improving shoulder mobility — particularly useful when mounting a rifle. SAPI Style Cut matches the standard military SAPI footprint and fits carriers designed around that geometry. Both cuts are available in 10x12 and 11x14.
No. The MOPC Gen II does not have integrated hard side plate pockets. The cummerbund side pockets accept the CaliberX IIIA soft armor side panels, which provide side coverage at significantly less weight than hard side plates. If you want to run hard AR550 side plates, you need to add the separately sold VAS Side Plate Inserts.
