The dCS Bartók DAC is the entry point into the dCS Ring DAC experience — a single-box digital music player of extraordinary capability that unites technology developed for the Rossini range with a custom high-performance UPnP streamer, a comprehensive array of digital inputs, and an optional headphone amplifier of genuine audiophile ambition. At £15,750, the Bartók DAC does not ask its owner to compromise; it asks only that they sit down and listen.
Every dCS product, from the Bartók to the reference Vivaldi system, is built around the Ring DAC — a proprietary conversion topology developed entirely in-house since the early 1990s and refined continuously across every generation of dCS engineering. Where conventional DAC designs rely on off-the-shelf conversion chips, the Ring DAC deploys an array of single-bit elements operating in parallel, governed by noise-shaping algorithms of extraordinary sophistication. The effect is a conversion process of unrivalled precision and musicality — one that retrieves low-level detail, preserves timing integrity, and renders the soundstage of a recording with a three-dimensionality and effortless realism that chip-based solutions cannot approach. The Bartók DAC implements the Ring DAC and dCS Digital Processing Platform as developed for the Rossini range — world-beating technology, in a single box, at the most accessible point in the dCS range.
The Bartók DAC features a custom high-performance UPnP music streamer, accessible over Ethernet from a NAS drive, music server, or online services including TIDAL and Spotify. AirPlay from Apple devices is supported natively. The network interface performs full MQA decoding and rendering, ensuring that MQA-encoded files and streams are processed to their full resolution. The dCS Bartók app provides elegant, unified control over all sources — iRadio, digital inputs, and UPnP sources — from a single control point on any iOS or Android device.
Beyond its streaming capabilities, the Bartók DAC accepts digital audio from an extensive array of industry-standard inputs: USB, AES, and S/PDIF on both BNC and RCA. Balanced and unbalanced analogue outputs allow direct connection to a power amplifier, removing the need for a separate preamplifier and simplifying the signal path — one of the most consequential improvements available in any high-performance system.
DXD upsampling is standard on the Bartók DAC — incoming data is lifted to 24-bit/352.8kHz or 384kHz before conversion, separating the processing workload from the Ring DAC and allowing each stage to operate at its absolute best. Optional DSD upsampling and an extensive selection of DSP filters allow the Bartók DAC to be tuned precisely to the characteristics of any system and any listener preference. The network interface supports up to 24-bit/384kS/s and DSD128, with DSD delivered in both DoP and native formats.
The Bartók DAC incorporates a custom-designed headphone amplifier — not an afterthought, but an integral part of the product's design — that works with both high and low impedance headphones in balanced and unbalanced formats. Twin mains transformers isolate the DAC circuitry from the headphone amplifier, ensuring that each stage operates without interference from the other. For those who listen on headphones as well as through loudspeakers, the Bartók DAC delivers the full dCS Ring DAC experience through both outputs.
The Bartók DAC supports dCS's auto-clocking architecture — the same system used in the Vivaldi range — which minimises jitter and improves sound quality significantly without requiring manual intervention. The system selects the correct clock frequency automatically for every incoming source, eliminating a consequential source of timing instability and ensuring that the Ring DAC operates in the most favourable conditions at all times.
Like every dCS product, the Bartók DAC is built on programmable logic updateable via CD, USB, or the automated download facility — ensuring that each owner benefits from every advance dCS make in their ongoing research and development programme. New features and performance improvements are delivered over the lifetime of the product, protecting the long-term value of the investment in a way that conventional hardware cannot.
The Bartók DAC is for the listener who wants to experience what the Ring DAC genuinely sounds like — not as a theoretical proposition, but as a daily reality — and who wants to do so in a single, elegantly resolved component. It is the natural starting point for those considering the dCS range for the first time, and a genuinely complete solution for those who have no desire to go further. Those who wish to take the next step will find the dCS Rossini Apex DAC and dCS Rossini Master Clock await them — and the dCS Bartók Apex represents a significant upgrade to the Bartók platform for those who wish to remain within the single-box architecture.
Martins Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968. Elizabeth Gould runs the business today, and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind. The Bartók DAC is a component we know well — Dave or Chris will demonstrate it at our Norwich showroom, in a system that reveals exactly what it is capable of, and help you understand where it sits within the broader dCS range and what a move up to the dCS Rossini Apex DAC would add.
