Part IX of the thirteen-piece painting cycle
Original painting size: 36.5 x 30.5 cm; Čt 190
The Creation cycle is like a painted myth of the birth of the world—one of the most powerful and profound series in M.K. Čiurlionis’ entire artistic legacy. Each painting represents a step toward harmony. Part IX is among the most dramatic in the series: the moment when the world is nearly complete, the climax where order emerges—earth, sky, and time are born.
"The world is a vast canvas on which each of us leaves a mark."
— M.K. Čiurlionis
Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875–1911) was one of the most prominent Lithuanian artists, leaving a lasting impact on both Lithuanian culture and the broader history of modern European art. A painter, composer, and writer, Čiurlionis was a true polymath whose life lasted only 35 years, yet his legacy is immense. Working at the intersection of Symbolism and Modernism, he is regarded as one of the pioneers of early abstract art. Čiurlionis was the first Lithuanian artist to combine music and painting into a single artistic language. His works are often described as “painted music.” Deeply rooted in Lithuanian culture and the mystical beauty of nature, his art embodies the soul of the nation.
