The essent clock (エッセント), designed by Daisuke Kitagawa, was created through a careful exploration of the essential function and materials of a wall clock.
Time is expressed through two systems: the 12-hour scale for hours and the 60-minute/second scale for minutes and seconds. While most clocks display only the numbers 1-12, essent presents both systems clearly by using two sets of numerals and two distinct colours, allowing the hour, minute, and second scales to be recognised more intuitively at a glance. A custom typeface was also developed to ensure clarity while maintaining a calm, balanced appearance.
Inspired by traditional letterpress printing, the dial is crafted from thick paper and finished with foil stamping and blind embossing, creating subtle depth and texture rarely seen in wall clocks.
Thoughtfully balancing function, material, and form, essent offers a clock that is clear, refined, and easy to read for both children and adults. Its understated design fits naturally into modern interiors and also makes a thoughtful gift for design lovers or housewarmings.
Carefully crafted in Japan, Essent reflects the precision and quiet refinement of contemporary Japanese design.
