Vitamin E is a blanket term for a group of eight fat-soluble compounds. These compounds divide evenly into four tocopherols and four tocotrienols, both of which further divide into alpha, beta, delta, and gamma vitamers. Of all the vitamin E forms, the body prefers alpha tocopherol. Tocopherols are powerful antioxidants that support several aspects of health.
Scientists discovered and isolated vitamin E in 1922 and 1935, respectively. They learned it is an essential nutrient for live births while studying animals. As a result, they initially called it tocopherol after the Greek words that mean bear, birth, or carry. One clinical trial reported that individuals taking oral vitamin E supplements experienced a 34.5% increase in hair growth compared to the placebo group’s 0.1% increase. Other research indicates vitamin E encourages hair growth by improving blood circulation in the scalp. It may also reduce hair loss due to its antioxidant properties, as oxidative stress can result in hair loss.
Vitamin E supplements have few side effects based on scientific studies. On rare occasions, some individuals may experience nausea, fatigue, headache, or diarrhea while taking vitamin E supplements. Vitamin E may interact with certain medications, such as anticoagulants and niacin. Exceeding the tolerable upper intake levels can result in serious adverse health effects.
