This very elegant and extremely rare antique two‑piece overdress, dating to the late 1870s or early 1880s, represents a remarkable example of high‑Victorian fashion. As its name suggests, the overdress was worn over a silk dress or another fine undergarment, creating the layered, sculptural silhouette characteristic of the era.

The skirt, open at the back and fastened with hooks and eyelets, is decorated along the hem with embroidered lace, adding refinement and movement. The top, designed in the style of a fitted jacket, closes at the front with cords and recalls the elegant lines of princess‑style dresses. The long sleeves with wide cuffs further emphasize the graceful proportions of the garment.

The overdress is made of woven silk lace, an exceptionally elaborate textile. The lace is likely hand‑embroidered with white Bohemian glass beads, a luxurious detail that highlights the craftsmanship and expense associated with garments of this type.

Included with the ensemble is a high‑quality petticoat from the 1880s, made of cotton gauze and very well preserved, with only the smallest holes in the front area. Although not original to the overdress, it complements the piece beautifully and is delivered together with it.

The overdress itself is in good to very good condition. A few tiny stains, the occasional missing bead, and the smallest tears in the lace at the hem are present—minor and entirely expected in an antique dress of this age. None of these details detract from the garment’s extraordinary elegance.

This piece is exceptionally rare. After handling hundreds of antique dresses over the years, we have not encountered another example like this. It stands as a testament to the artistry, luxury, and design innovation of late‑19th‑century fashion.
