Possession is a feverish, genre-defying descent into madness directed by Andrzej Żuławski. Set in Cold War Berlin, the film follows Mark (Sam Neill), a spy who returns home to find his wife Anna (Isabelle Adjani) asking for a divorce. What begins as a domestic breakdown spirals into something far more unhinged: infidelity, doppelgŠngers, grotesque transformations, and a creature born from obsession. Żuławski blends psychological horror, political metaphor, and surreal body horror into a volatile cocktail of grief and identity crisis. Adjani’s tour-de-force performance Ñ especially her infamous subway scene Ñ remains one of cinema’s most unforgettable portrayals of unravelling womanhood.
