The cyanotype process is a wonderful way to get started with printmaking — it's a highly adaptable, time-tested process that uses the power of the sun to make permanent prints.

Here's how it works in a nutshell: you mix a photosensitive dye from the components in this kit. When exposed to the sun's UV light, the dye turns into Prussian blue pigment (ferric ferrocyanide) and becomes permanent. To make a print, you mask any areas that should stay white, then expose the paper to the sun and wash it out with water. The masked areas will turn white again, while the exposed areas will stay colored.

Jacquard provides much, much more detailed instructions inside this artist-friendly box, including the specifics of how to mix the dye, how to make photo prints with your inkjet printer, how to make nature prints with flowers and leaves, and how to carry out the entire exposure and washing process. Online tools are also provided to help you create photo negatives and understand the cyanotype process.

Included in this kit are all the supplies, tools, and accessories you'll need to get started with cyanotype. You get: a 1 oz. bottle of potassium ferricyanide and a 1 oz. bottle of ferric ammonium citrate, the key components of cyanotype printing; a small mixing cup; 3 sheets of SolarFast film; one film marker; a 9" x 12" glass plate with hardboard backer for printing; five sheets of 100% rag Hahnemuehle printmaking paper; a wide hake brush for preparing paper; and four binder clips for hanging prints to dry.

The chemistry included in this box is enough to make at least a dozen 8.5" x 11" prints (please note that there are only five sheets of paper in the box, so you may want to add a pad of printmaking or watercolor paper to your order.)
