The fourth Edlavitch in the collection is now available for audition, trial, and sale. Of the three already sold, one went some years ago to David Bromberg. Specifically, for his work toward an American Collection at the Smithsonian.

A remarkable violin and highly personal interpretation of Guadagnini with some distinctly Bohemian characteristics and a voice every bit as rich and colorful as its unique aesthetic; featuring our custom made ebony fittings with Stradpet titanium tuner, and Kevlar tailgut.

Dilworth notes that Edlavitch discontinued making instruments in 1930, making this late example dated 1932 among the last if not the final violin he created. Having handled three others personally and written appraisals for others, I can personally attest the handwriting is unmistakably his. So too is the handwork, if not with a slightly heavier treatment to the details and edge-work. Nonetheless, an instrument from one of my favorite turn of the century makers with a lyrical, colorful voice which supports even the most rigorous passages with flexibility and nuance.

EDLAVITCH, Charles J. Born 1874 Jonàva Lithuania, d.c.1930 Baltimore, Maryland USA. Pupil of Y. Tefira in Jonàva. Active from 1890. Emigrated to the USA 1900. Established in Baltimore. Highly professional and prolific work on classical Cremonese modelling with distinctive Bohemian touches. Hard darkly coloured varnish. Credited with 400 violins, 20 violas, and 28 cellos. Chas. J.
