Dzi Beads are ancient beads from Tibet, similar to Etched Carnelian Beads, created by baking natural dyes onto agate to form intricate patterns. These beads are believed to date back to the 1st to 6th centuries AD. Despite their age, the exact components of the dyes used remain a mystery, adding to the enigmatic allure of these beads. While predominantly found in Tibet, they have also been discovered in Bhutan and the Ladakh region of the Himalayas.
The different baked patterns on these beads are thought to hold various meanings, with the ones featuring round "eye" designs being particularly prized. In Tibetan culture, Dzi Beads are regarded as amulets for wealth and prosperity, passed down through generations and treasured as ornaments. Recently, their popularity has surged in China, where they are known as "Tian Zhu" (Heavenly Beads). While many replicas using similar techniques are now available, genuine ancient Dzi Beads remain highly coveted and rare.
Within the category of Dzi Beads, those featuring stripe patterns instead of "eye" designs are referred to as Striped Dzi Beads or "Sen Zhu" (Line Beads).
