Dzi Beads are ancient beads from Tibet, similar to etched carnelian beads. These beads are designed by baking natural dyes into agate to create patterns. They are believed to have been made between the 1st and 6th centuries AD. However, the exact components of the dyes used remain a mystery, making these beads one of the most enigmatic antique beads. While primarily found in Tibet, they have also been discovered in Bhutan and the Ladakh region of the Himalayas. The different baked patterns on the beads are thought to hold various meanings, and among them, those with circular "eye" patterns in good condition are especially popular.
In Tibet, Dzi Beads are cherished as "amulets of wealth and prosperity" and are passed down through generations as precious adornments. In recent years, their popularity has soared in China, where they are known as "Tianzhu" (天珠). Many replicas made using similar techniques are widely available. However, ancient Dzi Beads, passed down through generations, are highly rare and valuable.
Among Dzi Beads, those with striped patterns rather than "eye" patterns are referred to as Chongzi or "Line Beads" (線珠).
