Chevron beads were invented in the late 1400s by Maria Valovelli on the island of Murano, Italy. While many Venetian bead-making techniques are adaptations of ancient methods, the Chevron technique is unique to Venice. Chevron beads, also known as Star Beads or Rosetta Beads, have been found with up to ten layers, predominantly in blue. Red, green, and black Chevrons are rarer and highly prized. The name "Chevron" signifies the bead's distinctive zigzag pattern. Later, the technique also spread to the Netherlands.
