About Dzi Beads (Chong Dzi Beads):

Dzi beads are ancient beads from Tibet, similar to etched carnelian, designed with patterns by firing natural dyes onto agate. These beads are believed to have been made between the 1st and 6th centuries AD. However, the ingredients of the dyes used in the firing process remain largely unexplained, adding to the mystery of these antique beads. They are mainly found in Tibet, but also in Bhutan and regions like Ladakh in the Himalayas. Different firing patterns are thought to hold various meanings, with the round "eye" patterns being highly prized in good condition.

In Tibet, Dzi beads are considered "amulets of wealth and prosperity" and are treasured as heirlooms. Recently, their popularity has surged in China, where they are known as "Tian Zhu" (heavenly beads). Many replicas made using similar techniques are now available, but the ancient Dzi beads are exceptionally rare and valuable.

Difference Between Dzi Beads and Chong Dzi Beads:

Among Dzi beads, those with striped patterns rather than "eye" motifs are called Chong Dzi or "lined beads" (senju).
